Teachings Rightly Dividing the Conditional Blessings and the Unconditional Blessing Confusion |
Remember Columbine by: Nicki Parr
"P.S. Honestly, I want to live completely for God. It's hard
and scary, but totally worth it."
Cassie Bernall wrote this to a friend the
night before she died at Columbine High School.
April 20, 1999 was a Tuesday that was never
expected. For the Bernall family, it was just another
regular school day. Misty Bernall (the mother) woke her two
kids that morning to get them ready to go to school. They
didn't know what was waiting to happen that day.
When Chris and Cassie Bernall left for school
that day they told their mother good-bye, walked out the
door, and headed off. Cassie was a little behind on her
homework, so when she got to school she went into the
library with a friend to finish the book that they were
studying. A few minutes later one of the teachers ran in the
library screaming for people to get under tables or run,
some kids in the school had guns. Many of the kids in the
library thought that the people with the guns were just
playing a joke and disregarded what the teacher was saying.
But when two boys busted into the library shooting, the
students were moving and trying to get away from the gun
shots. One of the boys saw Cassie under a table praying and
walked over to the table that she was under.
"Do you believe in God?" one of the boys
asked her.
"Yes," she told him, without another thought.
"Why?" he asked her. But before she got a
chance to answer his second question, he held the gun to her
head and shot her.
When Cassie was little she always wanted to
do things with her daddy. She loved being outdoors and
staying with the family. That changed as she got older.
Before her shooting, her life at home wasn't
always easy. She went to a public school and thought that
she had good friends. One day as her mom was looking for a
Bible that was given to Cassie, she found threatening
letters stashed in one of Cassie's drawers. As she read them
she saw very graphic drawings of evil and death signs. The
letters were trying to convince Cassie to kill her parents,
kill herself, or run away. Her mom had asked her about what
the letters were and she told her that she and her friend
weren't really serious about what they were saying in the
threatening letters. But her mom was scared and didn't know
what would happen if things like this continued.
Now that she knew what was going on between
Cassie and her friends, she decided to go to a church pastor
and find out what to do about the problems. The pastor also
talked to the youth pastor and tried to help Cassie's
mother. They eventually came to an agreement that the two
girls shouldn't be allowed to talk to each other anymore.
So, Cassie's mother transferred her to a private school. At
first, Cassie didn't want to talk to anyone, and she didn't
think that anyone liked her or wanted to have anything to do
with her. Soon after she started in the private school she
met a girl named Jamie. Jamie tried to talk to her and
wanted to know more about her, but Cassie never wanted to
talk. Then, Jamie told Cassie about a youth retreat that her
church was having and wanted her to come. Cassie talked to
her parents, but at first they didn't like the idea. Then
they decided that this could be what she needed, so they let
her go. The retreat had changed her life. While they were
doing an evening praise and worship time, Cassie felt the
need to ask God to forgive her for everything she had done.
She went outside and started crying and talking to God. When
she got home after the retreat, she went to her mom, hugged
her and said "Mom, I've changed. I've totally changed. I
know you are not going to believe it, but I'll prove it to
you." From then on, her friends and family saw a change in
the way she was. She wasn't a major religious person, but
she was much happier and wasn't as distant from people.
Just remember what happened to Cassie Bernall,
and try to put yourself in her possision. What would you
have said to those boys? Whould you have said what Cassie
said, even if you knew that you could get killed for
speaking your mind? Cassie was very brave to say something
like that when her life was at risk! Remember what happened
on April 20, 1999.
